FEED YOUR FEATHERED FRIENDS
THIS WINTER!
Winter is the season of limited resources for wildlife because most plant life is dormant. Many bird species deal with this lack of food by migrating to the south with its extended growing season. For the more hardy species, the backyard birdwatcher plays an important role in supporting their winter residence in the Washington area.
Certain birds like Goldfinches, Blue Jays, Cedar Waxwings and Crows will band together in large single species flocks until spring when food is abundant. This social group behavior makes foraging more likely to succeed. Another bonus for the group is better avoidance of predators. Classic members of the Mid Atlantic mixed flocks include the Downy Woodpecker, Tufted Titmouse, Chickadee, and White Breasted Nuthatch. When feeding these groups, it is a good idea to provide multiple seed sizes, as well as suet. Suet is especially important for insectivores like Woodpeckers and Nuthatches. The Garden Center carries all of the wild bird food and supplies you need. http://www.campbellferrara.com/
Backyard birdfeeders can provide dependable location for our feathered friends. During the cold months, a dependable daily source of seed protein and animal fat helps to keep a bird’s metabolism producing heat throughout the nights. Feeders that accommodate different size birds would be advantageous to promoting balance. Big bully birds won’t push the little guys out of business. Remember the birds are counting on you!
